The ice cream shipped from Queensland bluffs local suppliers

"We are manufacturing it. It's ridiculous to look for regional suppliers. We just want to see our product in local stores. "

Damian O'Shea, co-owner of Busselton Ice Supply, is not afraid of losing the company if it is overpriced, but the price of their ice bags is better.

"We are entering the summer school holidays, the busiest time of the year and the roads are crazy. It's just two more trucks going down that road, "he said.

The local Aldi supermarket went further and brought its ice from the east, said the two men, transporting the frozen goods from Queensland.

A spokesman for Caltex said the company was using two major ice cream suppliers in WA, both based in Washington and able to supply 112 stores.

"We are trying to use local suppliers for our WA operations wherever possible, and are currently maintaining long-term relationships with a number of local organizations," the spokesman said.

Aldi has been contacted for a comment.

Jodie Richards, general manager of the Busselton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that it was a documented fact that local buying had long-term benefits for all of the community.

Richards said support for local businesses creates jobs, growth opportunities, social services and community experiences.

Libby Mettam, MP for Vbade, said it was disappointing to hear a local company not supporting a local product such as Busselton Ice for ice cream produced thousands of miles away.

"A company has every right to make a business decision about the products it chooses to sell in its business," she said.

"Residents also have the right to choose companies and products that promote local products and jobs."
