They stormed San Francisco as clinical victories over Samoa, the United States hosts and the winners of the World Series in South Africa earned them a place in the final.

Despite falling to the reigning New Zealand champions 33-12 in the centerpiece, Amor was proud to have guided his team to the podium in three of their last four tournaments.

"It's disappointing to have missed first place, but I'm delighted with the way the guys have been performing throughout the tournament," said Amor, who also led the team. 39; GB team to the money at Rio 2016.

"They had very close games and played rugby.

"This marks the end of a very long year but I am really happy with how we grew up as a program and how the players grew up too.

"Since the Commonwealth Games, we have won a medal at every shootout and we have some really exciting talent, which is very encouraging as we approach next season."

The British Commonwealth bronze produced a purple spot in the form of second place at the Singapore and Paris stages of the World Series.

The Red Rose had six members of the British squad who had secured the Olympic silver medal two years ago, including Captain Tom Mitchell, Phil Burgess, Dan Norton and James Rodwell.

The young contingent also thrived in front of the 102,000 spectators of the weekend, Harry Glover, 22, who received the title of Player of the Breakthrough Tournament.

England beat Samoa 19-15 in the round of 16, before Burgess's dramatic score led to a 24-19 triumph over the United States.

A five-fight fight against the Blitzboks was perhaps their most impressive, Mitchell, Norton, Glover, Ollie Lindsay-Hague and Ruaridh McConnochie.

Despite attempts by McConnochie and Mike Ellery, they could not avoid a repeat of the 2013 World Cup – which also ended in a loss to New Zealand in the final.

This year's tournament saw a move to a complete knockout format, a change that Amor felt his team embraced.

He said, "The unique format makes it under high pressure with a lot of drama, which is great for all the fans watching.

"As a result of that, you have to approach the competition in a different way and I am really happy with how the guys have adapted to this new knockout competition.

"Playing in this new city and in this new place was brilliant – the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing throughout the tournament and we are really grateful for all who supported us."
