TThe growing army of Matildas fans – a new generation of golden girls, gathered by the thousands to see their heroine show off her famous talents. To prove it, many of them were dressed in Australia with shirts bearing the name of Sam Kerr on the back.
The Penrith field was of a perfect green and the fiery sun bathed the stage with a golden light. Everything was planned so that the women, in their matching green and gold tones, are preparing for next year's World Cup with a ritual mbadacre of Chile.
But it did not work like that. The South Americans – backed by a noisy and vociferous group of their own supporters dressed in bright red heads – became party supporters turned into parties with a grainy display that allowed them to gain confidence over the match .
The home team was ranked sixth in the world prior to this game, but after a calamitous and sometimes comical defensive defense, they may not be sitting in such a high position any longer. And with their potential, the sowing in World Cup is questioned.
Such a result would have been easily considered ridiculous at the beginning of the contest. The ground buzzed with anticipation whenever Kerr touched the ball or slipped into a possible goal position.
Western Australia is a world-clbad performer – this year she became the first woman to score more than 50 goals in the US National Women's Football League – and she has charisma.
One of her admirers, nine-year-old Stella, of Clovelly, doubted she was the best player in the show and had all the experience of seeing the Matildas in action "really cool".
On the field, Matildas' top-five ranked behind their ragged opponents and their pressure was soon announced when Emily van Egmond converted a penalty in the ninth minute. Kerr was approached, forcing Chilean goaltender Christiane Endler to make a good save, just like Tameka Butt.
But it was a blunder in the middle of the first half involving Lydia Williams, the opposing side of Endler, who changed the game, with Francisco Lara on a defensive scrum to create an open goal.
The Matildas lost their way after the break and two other defensive screamers earned Chile two more goals.
Kerr hit the post with a blinking head towards the end and his pbad to the right did not lead to the goal he deserved. But the fans remained hooked, convinced to see her score points and to go for her celebration in backflip.
As Stella pointed out, "they kept trying even after Chile scored the third goal," and she was also impressed by their strong heads and their pbad.
Defeat could silence expectations before France 2019, but it will not deter Matilda's army. Claudia, 12, of Canterbury, believes that women's football is better than men's football (she regularly visits Sydney FC and it was her fourth or fifth visit to the Matildas).
"I prefer it because it's not very fast, it's more aggressive and they do not stay on the ground and do not pretend to stay injured for hours."
"Today's match was very fast, with a lot of shooting and I was very nervous throughout the match. The Matildas were good in the first half but did not work in the second half. "
And, in a final word on the match, it was a euphemism, she said: "Their defense was just not very good."
