According to a new study published in the journal Diabetologia women with diabetes may be at a higher risk of cancer than men with diabetes. This result is shocking if one considers that 415 million people suffer from diabetes in the world and that India also has a large diabetic population. The study examined data on cancer events at all sites (incidents or fatalities only) of 121 cohorts, with the participation of 19,239,302 individuals. The study found that women with diabetes were 27% more likely to develop cancer at a later stage, compared to women without diabetes, while for men with diabetes, the risk was only 19% higher than for men non-diabetic. The results were valid for women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the study also identified several types of cancers that could affect these diabetic women.
The study found that women with diabetes had higher risks of developing kidney cancer. 11 percent), oral cancer (13 percent), stomach cancer (14 percent) and leukemia (15 percent), compared to men suffering from the same disease.
