Chris Waller, who will soon be in his way when he is not at all 100 Group 1 winners in Australia at some time over the next 12 months.

Waller has six winners at the elite level already at least 1 year ago – who is barely 11 weeks old – to enter the 90s for the career Group 1 winners, having secured his first in 2007/08 with Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honor.

But there is a glitch in the insatiable Waller winning machine that the trainer has been unable to iron out as yet.

That's his record in the Caulfield Cup.

Waller, who trains the fancied mare Youngstar and first emergency Patrick Erin for the 2018 edition, has saddled 16 runners in the Caulfield Cup since 2010 and has not bothered the scorers.

In fact, Royal Descent's fifth placing in 2013 is in the top six.

"It was a pretty long fifth or sixth if I remember rightly," Waller told RSN927's Racing Pulse when referring to his best Caulfield Cup result. "We're always trying and we've got a good race in this race and we keep lining up, we might win one someday."

The Caulfield Cup is also one of Victoria's leading trainers. Darren Weir has had little impact. While Weir has been struggling for some of the country's biggest breeds, the Caulfield Cup has just got a step too far to this point.

On Saturday Weir saddles the well-supported pair of Kings Will Dream and Night's Watch as well as the underdog Gallic Chieftain, but has had just three previous starters in the race with Humidor (fifth) last year and Real Love (fifth) in 2016 his best results.
