Take two trips around the Earth – in 15 minutes. The European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Alexander Gerst, recently captured the longest continuous timelapse of space.
The magnificent shot goes from Tunisia through Beijing and Australia on two trips around the planet, showing the Earth twice a day. You can also see the resort travel across vast expanses of ocean and brightly lit cities. There are also clouds, thunderstorms and thunderbolts.
The Accelerated Plane includes about 21,375 images of the Earth, all captured by Gerst from the International Space Station to celebrate the 20 years of the ISS, its international collaboration and research. The 15-minute clip was sped up to 12.5 times faster than the actual speed of the observatory.
A map located in the upper right corner of the screen indicates the location of the station during the trip.
