A Victorian family was reunited after her car was stolen and crashed – with her toddler still inside.
The scary incident occurred last night in Mildura, in the northwestern part of the state, around 6:30 pm, after a young family arrived at a local liquor store.
Chief Constable Kendra Jackson told news.com.au that the car – a black Captiva Holden – had been stolen in the pbad in front of a bottle shop located on Deakin Avenue.
The vehicle was about 20 minutes later on Cureton Avenue after hitting a tree.
A woman, aged about 30, was arrested shortly after she was attempting to break into a nearby house.
"The child was treated at the scene and, fortunately, he was not injured before he was reunited with his family," said Chief Constable Kendra Jackson.
"The Mildura woman was taken to the hospital where she remains in police custody."
Brodie Venables, employee of the bottle shop, told the Herald Sunthe parents of the two-year-old girl had left her inside their car for less than a minute to quickly pay for their belongings when the car had been swept away.
He stated that they had "panicked" after the Captiva was chased by a woman who had entered the street.
"They were horrified. They were completely beside themselves, they ran outside and looked in the street to see where the car had gone, "he told the publication.
"Initially, she opened the pbadenger door, got a little hard skin and realized that the car was empty, then went around and climbed to the driver's seat."
Witnesses with information about the incident are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1 800 333 000.
