The Cbadini spacecraft has faithfully served NASA before it s'. crush in September 2017 after extending its mission several times. Already in 1997, Cbadini had been sent by a rocket into space. In 2004, the probe finally came into orbit around Saturn and since then has not only sent NASA spectacular glimpses of the planet, but also important images.
The sounds of Saturn could now be evaluated
Two weeks before the crash, the probe detected strange noises that researchers could now clbadify. As scientists report in two studies published in Geophysical Research Letters, Saturn and its moon Enceladus could indeed communicate with each other in their own way.
Normally, there are no sounds in the space. The sound requires a carrier medium such as liquid, gas or solid to be picked up as a vibration by the human ear – but nothing is available in the space. Cbadini was able to use plasma radio wave (RPWS) acquisition instruments to record plasma waves observed between Saturn and Enceladus.
Saturn and its moon Enceladus transmit signals
"Enceladus is a small generator that travels around Saturn. We know it as a source of continuous energy," said Ali Sulaiman, a global scientist at the University of Iowa and chief of the studies. "We have now found that Saturn interacts with its moon by sending signals in the form of plasma waves." He succeeds with a magnetic field that connects him to the Enceladus over a distance of several hundred thousand kilometers. "
Researchers are already aware of sounds like this
In order to evaluate this electromagnetic radiation, scientists first had to convert it to audio files, speeding them from 16 minutes to 28.5 seconds and reducing wave size by a factor of five. In fact, there were strange sounds that could come from a horror movie.
However, this type of noise is not new to scientists and certainly not a cause for concern – they also occur regularly with polar lights. It is precisely for this reason that researchers also have a very particular name: aurorales whistle. This auroral whistle near Saturn is only another proof that the planet and its satellite have a different relationship than that of the Earth and the Moon. The Saturnmoon is not only responsible for one of Saturn's rings, Saturn's magnetic field also affects Enceladus.
