The opening of the 73rd Bregenz Festival was completed on Wednesday evening by many applause.
The first Austrian operatic rarity "Beatrice Cenci" by Berthold Goldschmidt (1903-1996), played in the 16th century, was staged by Johannes Erath at the Festspielhaus with strong images, but without explicit contemporary references.
The story, based on a true historical case, concerns the patriarch Francesco Cenci (interpreted by Christoph Pohl), who usually buy from the church the responsibility of his brutal actions. A lot of purple and a lot of gold characterize Katharina Tasch's costumes. The second wife of Cencis Lucrezia (Dsamilja Kaiser) and his daughter Beatrice (Gal James) covet and give order for a martial home, for which they are punished by the implacable church with death.
In the scene of the dungeon of the third act comes the Goldschmidt's little elegiac music is best expressed. It is here that the two-quarter opera evening, orchestrated by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Johannes Debus, takes place in the strongest moments.
First "Carmen"
"Beatrice Cenci" is twice on the program of the Bregenz Festival. Today, last year 's sea – stage production, Georges Bizet' s "Carmen", has resumed recovery. The weather forecast is good
