Former DTM driver Robert Wickens is paralyzed from the hip after his fatal accident. The Canadian announced on Instagram and Twitter. "Some have irritated the severity of my injuries, so I wanted to inform you of the reality," wrote Wickens, posting a video showing how difficult it is to move from a couch to a wheelchair.
Wickens collided with Ryan Hunter-Reay's car in mid-August in the American IndyCar series at the Pocono / Pennsylvania race. Aged 29, he was injured several times, including a fractured thoracic spine, a spinal cord injury and a broken neck. Wickens had said in September that he was hoping to "get back in a race car as soon as possible".
"My upper body is getting stronger," wrote Wickens. "I just posted videos of the slightest movement in my legs, but the reality is that I'm far from running alone." He has never worked harder for something in his life, I give everything I have to stimulate those nerves in my legs. "
Wickens drove from 2012 to 2017 at the DTM, where he won five races. His best overall result in 2016, when he finished fourth. From 2018, he started in the IndyCar series.
