Heiko Herrlich: Bayer Leverkusen and the question of training – Sport

A few weeks ago, it became too colorful for those in charge. Once again, Bayer Leverkusen had a difficult start to the season with coach Heiko Herrlich. Again, the club is after eight days of matches and only two wins in the bottom half of the table. As in the previous season, Leverkusen is way behind its own expectations – qualifying for European competitions, this should already be the case. That's why Leverkusen's sports director, Rudi Völler, picked up the phone and apparently asked Ralph Hasenhüttl – who has been unemployed since 1 October after his breakup with RB Leipzig. So he reported the "kicker". The Austrian, however, refused, fortunately – he was not ready for a new task.

A year ago, Heiko Herrlich turned the corner with Bayer, lost no Bundesliga games in November and December and finished in fifth place. In the Europa League, it lasted until Thursday too, with two wins for the Rhinelander. Then come the 2: 3 in Zurich – after a draw in Freiburg and against Hannover, the next low blow. Already at the weekend, there had been the first "wonderful" calls. Patience with the coach is at the end of the supporters and slowly, this is probably true for those in charge. However, the fact that Bayer bosses observe so early in the season and even ask other coaches is already debatable.

No doubt this is the first step of Heiko Herrlich in a big Bundesliga club. Before Leverkusen had surprisingly engaged him, he had led Jahn Regensburg sensational in the second division. There you pay attention. There is a good reason why Völler does not seem to trust.

The BVB match as a stumbling point of the season at Leverkusen

There was once weak league matches. Bayer started the season with three losses. After that, there were compulsory victories in Razgrad and against Mainz and Düsseldorf. Everything seemed to be working like last year – Leverkusen had started.

Then came the stumbling point of the season, decisive reason for distrust of the bosses: the home game against Borussia Dortmund. Bayer played very well in football, led the break with a score of 2: 0 and had chances on opportunities to reload the third goal. The rest is known: BVB won 4: 2. And even though Bayer won more than 4-2 in the Europa League against Larnaka, the team was a little broken. After the weak performances against Freiburg, Hannover and Zurich Leverkusen, this is what is happening now: between impatient fans and officials as well as the question of whether October 2018 was not too much for Heiko Herrlich.

There is "no ultimatum for the coach, not yet," said Rudi Völler after the 2: 2 against Hannover. After the 2: 3 in Zurich, Völler remained silent until now. But Kai Havertz said the team knew what to expect. "The question is why are we still playing so badly or we have so little confidence in ourselves," he said. "We are doing everything wrong now that you can do what is wrong." And it is partly still the coach. The away match in Bremen on Sunday will be the final for Herrlich. A finale that he might not win at all.
