Sometimes gripping and hard, then cuddly and catchy: catch Carl Cari's instruments, it's always a mood game. The local duo has developed a sound that "finds its place between sunset and sunrise", as the musicians say. After a long wait, the convincing debut "Anaana" will be released on November 2nd, followed by a long tour.
Stephanie Marie Louise Widmer and Alexander Köck have been working together for four years. They also published an EP. But the album just took a moment. "We took a lot of time to do it," Köck smiled during the APA interview. "We have not been ready for the moment, and for me, the album as a closed unit has the right to exist." And for that, he needs more than two, three singles. "It's good songs from the album, I think I can still listen to our album in ten years."
The repeat button can already be extremely busy. The ten songs in just over half an hour are enough to keep listening. Whether it's the "Summer Sun", the reduced blues of "Mazuka" or the catchy melody "Nothing is older than yesterday". Carl Cari relies on rock ingredients, subtle electronic influences, nothing against a good touch of music in the world and even less against catchy choruses. There is obviously a lot of power in the reduction. "I've always been a fan of albums with eight titles," said Köck laughing, "as Black Sabbath has always done, why should there be something that fills up? "
And yet, in 2018, you can certainly ask the question of the relevance of a vinyl record. Why not just send some songs in streaming? "We also had an EP in mind first," agrees Widmer. "But there were so many things that we thought were good, it made sense:" Anyway, we would have "stretched out the bow for a long time," adds Köck. "We are four years old and until now we have released five songs." Now, "Anaana" is also the conclusion of an old and the beginning of a new era. "It really starts a new section, and the album is a milestone, so to speak."
Cari Cari is already well known on national and international scenes: tours in Australia, concerts in Barcelona and Hamburg, festivals in Brighton and Prague are in the spotlight. This has also contributed to the development of sound. "We let plants grow naturally," says Köck. "It was important that it stays true, Stephanie and I are the ingredients, and we put them in a saucepan to see what comes in. No matter what we attack, it's Carl Cari." C ' is the way to keep "the sense of creativity" laughs the guitarist and singer. "We want to build our own world."
These last months have been very demanding. "In fact, we did not want to play live and focus on recording," says Widmer, who is also responsible for drums and voice. "But then we played so much like never before, of course it's exhausting." One day she sat down in the studio and started crying. "My senses were so penetrated that I could not make a decision, at some point you do not have the opinion because you're so dead." The intensity is now reflected in the album's title, which means about Maori about embers, at Greenland's mother again. "It was like a volcano," says Köck. "It is this raw energy, and the sun is the main theme of the album, so to speak as Mother of the Earth."
In any case, working in a duo enriches and releases. "Always," says Köck. "The most important thing is that there is no ego." So we hear on almost all points, "there is simply a blind trust between us". His colleague agrees with him, but: "It's still a game of ping-pong, until we find it cool, and at the same time it speeds up the work process because the constant exchange is there. "And how the display should sound, was clear anyway quickly:" Dirty and gross, "laughs Köck. "But it took us some time to have the self-confidence to demand that from others."
In the end, Rene Mühlberger from Pressyes found it, which made it a very fruitful collaboration. "It worked well, no explanation was needed," says Köck. "Everyone was free to work and receive this childish inspiration. The phrase" You can not bring this "does not exist here.We feel like children playing theater in their room. You can do it all as that group! "From November 2 (beginning of the tour in Linz), you will be able to convince yourself of life.
