A Briton died of rabies in Morocco after being bitten by a cat. This was announced by the British Public Health Service of Britain, specifically inviting travelers to Asia and Africa to comply with vaccination recommendations.
The Press Association news agency reported that the man concerned had been bitten several weeks ago but had not been treated quickly enough.
"In this case, vaccination was not fast enough," said Jimmy Whitworth, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In humans, the symptoms of rabies were "two to three months" after exposure to the virus. "It can only take a week, so it's important to see the doctor immediately and get vaccinated."
According to the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, treatment must take place immediately after a bite.
Rabies attacks the nervous system, especially the brain, causing complete paralysis and possibly death, said Jonathan Ball, a professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham. "There are some very effective vaccines, but they must be used before the symptoms appear."
According to health authorities, the latest case of rabies in the UK was recorded in Scotland in 2002, when a man had been bitten several times by an infected bat. Five more Britons contracted rabies between 2000 and 2017 after "having been in contact with an infected animal abroad".
