An oil painting of David Hockney, born in 1937, was auctioned at Christie's in New York for $ 90.3 million, or 79.88 million euros. It is therefore the highest price that a living artist has ever made for a work. Christie's gave 80 million dollars (68.5 million euros) to Hockney's "Portrait of an Artist (Double-Digit Pool)". It combines two of the most popular motifs of the representative of Pop Art: the glittering water of a pool and two human figures.
The 1972 work shows an elegantly dressed man standing by a swimming pool. He looks down at another man swimming towards him. The bottom is an idyllic forest and a mountain landscape.
Riddle about the old owners
"Portrait of an artist (basin with two characters)" is one of the most famous works of Hockney. It bore the title of several books about the artist and had been shown during an international retrospective of his work on the occasion of his 80th birthday last year.
Christie's did not mean who was the former owner of the work. According to the Bloomberg News Agency and the Artnet website, it belongs to British billionaire Joe Lewis, owner of investment company Tavistock Group and football club Tottenham Hotspur.
The record was previously held by Jeff Koons (born in 1955) with the steel sculpture "Balloon dog", which was auctioned in 2013 for $ 58.4 million.
