Warning: more Xarelto counterfeits have surfaced
Just days ago, the Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) reported that the original manufacturer Bayer had forged the drug Xarelto. More and more fake lots of anticoagulant have surfaced.
More fake lots discovered
In early June, the Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) drew attention to the counterfeit drug Xarelto® 20 mg (active ingredient rivaroxaban) from the original manufacturer Bayer AG in a Polish-Slovak packaging discovered in the UK by a parallel distributor. Two new batches of anticoagulants have now surfaced.
That's how you recognize fake
BfArM reports on its website two other confirmed fake lots of Xarelto® 20 mg from the original manufacturer Bayer AG, in Polish-Slovak packaging, which were discovered in the United Kingdom at a parallel distributor.
According to the information, the other two counterfeit lots are also Polish-Slovak and bear the names of existing lots, BXHUBD2 and BXHXL41, as well as the expiry date 09/2020.
Experts explain how to recognize counterfeits:
With the original product, the perforation lines are clearly visible, but the two perforation lines are not recognizable in the counterfeit batches BXHVHC3 and BXHXL41. And with the counterfeit lot BXHUBD2, the punch line is weak.
In addition, the three counterfeit batches BXHVHC3, BXHXL41 and BXHUBD2 are recognizable by the following feature:
- On the top of the blisters are printed on counterfeit lots, Bayer logos and always recognizable from all angles.
- When the original product is used, the Bayer logo is embossed and poorly recognizable by stray light (oblique).
Unfinished investigations
BfArM invites parallel distributors, wholesalers, pharmacists and users to check the medicines listed above and report any suspicious cases to BfArM.
According to reports, investigations in this case are still ongoing. The origin of counterfeiting is currently the subject of an investigation.
BfArM maintains close relations with national drug control authorities in Germany and with the European Medicines Agency, EMA.
As soon as additional information is available, BfArM will immediately inform.
Medications protect against blood clots
Xarelto® is a so-called anticoagulant.
"Anticoagulants help prevent some blood components from adhering to each other as easily, so they protect against blood clots," says the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care. (IQWIG) on the portal "gesundheitsinformation.de".
Colloquially, they are often called "anticoagulants". As they do not make the blood more fluid, this designation is actually not quite correct, "say the experts.
These drugs are used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease caused by blood clots. These include heart attacks, strokes and vein thromboses, "says IQWIG.
Taking the drug may also be badociated with undesirable side effects. The most common are bleeding, sometimes they go unnoticed.
