Munich (APA / DPA) – The Munich-based company Tado, which manufactures controllable heating and cooling systems via a smartphone, has received a new round of financing of $ 50 million (43.9 million euros). One of the international investors is the American company Amazon, which wants to position itself with its Alexa service in the heart of networked homes.

The money also comes from the E.ON energy company and the venture capital firms Total Energy Ventures, Energy Capital Innovation, Inven Capital and the European Investment Bank.

With the new round of financing, Tado has now raised nearly 90 million euros. With the money, Tado wants to "strengthen its position in the market and continue to invest in the development of high quality products and new service offerings".

Tado's network thermostats connect heaters and air conditioners to the Internet. The application on the smartphone recognizes as soon as residents leave the house or approach it again and adjusts the heating or air conditioning accordingly. Thus, should be avoided wasted energy in the absence. The system can also detect when a window is open and adjust the temperature accordingly. For temperature control at home, Tado also takes into account weather forecasts and applies self-learning algorithms. The goal is to save up to 31% on heating costs while improving comfort and well-being.

The Tado offer goes especially against Nest's air conditioning and heating controllers, which are part of Google's hardware service. However, the competitors are also various medium sized suppliers. Tado points out that around 30% of the world's energy is used for heating and cooling buildings. The smart thermostats market is expected to grow by 54% by the end of 2022, for a total of $ 6.8 billion.
