After careful consideration, the Firefox browser development team decided to remove support for RSS feeds and live bookmarks from the browser. There were indeed different options in the conversation, like "do nothing" and "invest heavily in a code update," says one entry in Mozilla's bug tracker. Comments in the bugtracker refer as an alternative to existing web extensions, offers RSS functionality. As a reason for the decision refer Mozilla developers on the advanced age of the code, which also has security issues and prevents optimization elsewhere. However, you do not have the resources to write and maintain the code from scratch.

This decision fits into a number of other decisions that the Firefox team has made to keep the browser competitive in the long run. This included abandoning the old extension system and replacing web extensions.

The bug report and some external discussions have many users disappointed with the decision. The head of Mozilla's engineering community, Mike Hoye, mentions it once again and asks the users to understand it. Although he himself was affected, the decision was still correct, writes Hoye, who also refers to some existing alternatives.

According to current plans, the end of RSS support is implemented with browser version 64, the end of the year should appear.
