In Vienna, the end of Air Berlin and more particularly of Niki really brought a breath of fresh air to the market, as the two companies offered in the last year of activity only a minimal Austrian program. Wizzair quickly recognized this gap and set up a base in Vienna. Although Ryanair also secured the Viennese market with Laudamotion, niche markets in Germany should have been even more interesting, especially in Ballermann's Mallorca traffic. It does not matter how you want to see this: with Wizzair and Laudamotion, two new aggressive price providers are active in Vienna, each having expanded its prices.

The second, but "unofficial" Niki successor, Anisec, has flooded the market with 100,000 penny notes and has certainly been a topic of conversation in many rounds, but this provider is not based on the principle of "very low cost" but considers itself rather than a "best low cost airline". While in Austria, the market obviously benefited from the bankruptcy of Niki, while new suppliers, more suppliers and sometimes lower prices took a new impetus, the situation of the old company. Sister Belair was completely different. A sale to an investor was not carried out because of "bankruptcy concerns", the AOC and the operating license were returned and the employees put on the street. A few weeks later, the "empty shell" was then returned to a company in Düsseldorf that wanted to bring Belair in the air, but could not raise enough money, which forced Belair Airlines AG to declare bankruptcy.

The victims were travelers, since the summer of 2018 had made it very clear that planning by drawing board managers was simply not working. Obviously, little things such as flight strikes, which are commonplace in countries like France or Italy for many years, or the fact that many airlines are looking for people and not just jobs for the former Berliners have not been taken into account. The result is known: an incredible number of flight cancellations and delays, some very serious. Even the self-proclaimed "premium carriers" then showed what they meant by "premium" and that the pbadengers, despite being several days late, were not even a place to stay, although they would have been obliged to make.

Other suppliers were so violent that they went bankrupt immediately after the summer season and can now join Niki, Belair and Air Berlin in the "air cemetery". Some competitors are frightening their travelers of strikes of staff fighting for better wages and working conditions, while the "very cheap" girls of the biggest European airlines are achieving paralyzing performance between megalomania and corporate governance completely overwhelming. Somewhere in between, the causes of the problems will be found. In short, what has the industry really learned from the bankruptcy of Air Berlin? Nothing on the contrary, because the sums spent are more important than ever and new bankruptcies are already inevitable.

And what lessons does politics draw? Also no! Although slogans are put forward, the airlines must improve considerably, but without a legal tightening, nothing will be done. And if the industry does not do it without legal "pressure," the policy will need to legislate to bring the aeronautical infrastructure back to a user-friendly and reliable level, including bottlenecks such as air traffic control, security checks and other "problem areas". to bring. Strikes by staff – be they airlines, security companies, air traffic control or other fly-side service providers – are in any case a clear warning. it goes on like this and you have to follow the changes immediately. If the industry itself does not succeed, the policy is obliged to provide the necessary "legal tutoring".
