Genoa offers the Stadio Luigi Ferraris as a solution to the match between River and Boca
After the transfer of the Copa Libertadores final between Argentine rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors, the Italian port of Genoa made an unusual decision.
The Italian city of Genoa has offered to host the first return match of the Copa Libertadores, postponed between rival rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors of Buenos Aires. Mayor Stefano Anzalone wrote a letter to the praesidia of both clubs.
"Our city, historically, culturally and through sports closely linked to Buenos Aires, feels a deep connection with their two clubs founded by Italian emigrants," the letter says.
The tragic collapse of the bridge in August, during which 43 people were killed, also gave Genoa a special sense of community and led to a reflection on their own roots.
