American jazz trumpet player Roy Hargrove, winner of a Grammy, died at the age of 49. Hargrove suffered a heart attack Friday in New York, following complications in the fight against kidney disease, his longtime director, Larry Clothier, said Saturday on his Facebook page.
Born in Texas, Hargrove studied at the College of Music in Dallas, where he was discovered during a tour of legendary trumpet player Wynton Marsalis. Sponsored by Marsalis, after completing high school, he went to many jazz festivals in Europe and made himself known very early in the world of contemporary jazz. For example, his project Soul Groove, "RH Factor", was also invited to Tränenpalast Berlin. The unconventional trumpet player also played at the Berlin Jazzfest. Hargrove has also dedicated a concert at this year's edition of the festival, which ends Sunday.
