Diesel: VW Group defines bonus program – economy

German manufacturers are launching an older diesel vehicle exchange program, agreed with the federal government. On Thursday, Volkswagen launched the national environmental premium for diesel drivers, granted since 2017, complemented by a special offer for 14 cities and districts particularly affected by nitrogen oxide emissions. Everywhere in Germany, the diesel diesel exchanged from 1 to 4 euros wants to eliminate VW. In addition, BMW and Mercedes had announced bonuses for customers who were paying for older diesel and buying a new or used car.

Critics see reduction actions as an instrument for reviving the new car sector – with ecological side effects. The hardware improvements, which the government specifically proposes as a second option for consumers, have so far been rejected by manufacturers or do not wish to fully cover the costs. The grand coalition is currently discussing possible fines of one billion fines for the industry.

Premiums from German builders in the 14 "intensive cities"

The new edition of the "environmental bonus" proposed until June 2018 at the national level – which is only granted when buying a diesel – makes sense for Volkswagen. The group far exceeds the 210,000 old diesel extracted from the street and replaced by a newer model, said the company.

There is now a special "exchange bonus" of up to € 7,000 in the 14 "government-intensive" cities designated by the government: Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Reutlingen, Düren, Hamburg, Limburg, Düsseldorf, Kiel, Heilbronn , Backnang, Darmstadt, Bochum and Ludwigsburg. Also Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, where the courts have allowed driving bans are likely to appear soon on the list. In these cities, payment can be made with Euro4 and Euro5 diesel of all brands. The premium paid by VW when buying VW models with all types of drives, including electric cars. In this case, the parapublic "environmental bonus" of 4,000 euros will also be paid. If a buyer decides to use an e-golf, the premium paid will double to reach 8,000 euros. Volkswagen, like other manufacturers, also offers advantageous financing, which should allow customers to access a low monthly financing rate for a new car without using capital.

Coming soon from Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt

The subsidiary of the Audi group also grants "change premiums" in the 14 cities up to a maximum of 9,000 euros. The two brands, VW and Audi, include either young or one year old cars, for which the premium is reduced to 50 to 75% of the premium of the new car. Similar offers from the group's brands, Skoda and Seat, are expected soon. According to the manufacturer, holders of Euro1 to Euro5 diesel vehicles of all "intensive city" brands should soon be informed in writing of the bonus programs offered by the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

BMW had already announced exchange premiums of up to 6,000 euros, Mercedes wishing to pay up to 10,000 euros – when buying a clbad S – (see graph). Foreign manufacturers have not yet defined their programs for priority regions.

The question is whether car buyers are doing a good deal with the new premiums. According to industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, part of the reductions for old diesel scrap should be offset by previous reductions. In the trade, discounts of 10 to 15% are common. A spokesman for VW explained that dealers would have the option of combining discounts, which are usually deducted from the price displayed, with other discounts. Stefan Bratzel, an expert colleague at Dudenhoffers, said: "It helps those who already want to buy a new car and can afford it." Bernhard Mattes, president of the VDA Automobile Association, reiterated that fleet renewal was the best way to improve the city's air. Simulations of nitrogen oxide emissions have shown that in 2020, with the exception of five to six "hot spots" located at all measuring points, the values The limits were respected: "This is another reason why driving bans throughout the region are not a definite solution."
