Firefox 65 supports WebP
Mozilla will use Firefox 65 in January 2019 to support Google's open WebP graphical format for static or animated compressed images with or without loss to the Web. WebP is an extension of the VP8 video codec.
As the Mozilla Bugzilla error database is currently exhausted, the browser maker will support since Firefox 65 in January 2019 the open WebP graphic format. Google sees WebP as a space-saving replacement for JPEG and PNG formats.
The Google format derived from the VP8 video codec format is supported in the internal Chrome browser since 2010. Opera followed in 2011 and Vivaldi also supports the format. Mozilla has long refused WebP support, as the format would not provide enough advantages over the JPEG format yet. In Firefox, WebP since version 49 was implemented on an experimental basis in September 2016, but was not activated by default. Since then, WebP has been temporarily activated, but was later deleted.
Konqueror, the KDE Web browser, supports WebP from KDE version 4.11. Many graphics programs such as GIMP, XnView, KolourPaint, Gwenview and Krita also support the format.
Now, the implementation of Mozilla is being addressed again, as indicated by the technical website Ghacks. The renewed interest in Mozilla for WebP may have been prompted by Microsoft's recent support for WebP for Windows 10 and its Edge browser.
Currently, Firefox 65 is already available under Nightly and WebP support can be tried.
