In the United States, six children at a clinic died of adenovirus infection. Twelve others are sick. This was reported by the New Jersey Department of Health. The affected hospital, the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, is not expected to accept new patients unless the outbreak is over.
Adenoviruses lead in most cases to respiratory diseases such as colds, bronchitis or pneumonia, which usually heal in people with a healthy immune system. In addition, conjunctivitis or diarrheal diseases can be the result of an infection, since the pathogens are usually transmitted by the hands.
A delegation from the Ministry of Health has already inspected the clinic and encountered "slight hand-cleaning problems" among staff. The team now wants to work closely with the hospital to fight against infections, according to a statement.
"In this case, we are dealing with a nasty combination of very sick children and an aggressive virus," said William Schaffner, an infectious drugologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
The six deaths all occurred in October. The Adenovirenstamm would be at the origin of the epidemic. According to the Ministry of Health, an infection with this strain can sometimes be difficult.
