The German winter athletes are decided and not Olympic champions like Laura Dahl Meier or Andreas Wellinger for their best last winter. The choice is rather the skier Thomas Dreßen – surprising, but also consistent.
It was the middle of March, the sun was shining on the Swedish Are and Thomas Dreßen really did not know what to say next to his wonderful winter. "So slow," he joked after his surprising third place in the last Super-G of the season. "I'll be a little embarrbading for other players on the podium." Well, a meteoric rise in the circle of the best ski racers in the world can also sum up with humor.
Now, this boring costume change for next winter at Herzogenaurach has been awarded in a surprising way as a ski athlete of the year 2018. In the elections, he garnered more votes than Laura Dahlmeier, Eric Frenzel or Andreas Wellinger, all Olympic champions. This is a remarkable result and one that weighs a lot because all the athletes of the national teams of the German Ski Association (DSV) have voted.
However, the German winter athletes have honored their choice and an extraordinary season. Dreßen won the downhill in Kitzbühel, as the first German for 39 years. He also earned a respectable fifth place finish at the Kvitfjell Olympics in Norway – two downhill victories in one season that have not yet succeeded the German. In the end, he finished third in the Downhill World Cup, four times, he climbed onto the podium in the speed disciplines. It is not uncommon that he misses it.
As often after his successes, Dreßen did not really know what to say after the price. Of course, "I'm happy" and yes, "it's a great honor for me", especially because the other athletes have chosen him, he said. On the other hand: "There were so many moments" last winter "which, in my opinion, were more important. More important than his victory in Kitzbühel. The Olympic victories of Dahlmeier or Wellinger, for example.
"He did the story"
For the DSV, on the other hand, it is very important to have a victorious driver in addition to the biathletes and ski jumpers who have succeeded in the prestigious alpine royal discipline. Wolfgang Maier, alpine director of DSV, commented about Dreßen: "He just caught the hammer, he surprised everyone in the business and we, we've always done some really good things for him, but he did a good job. Not so much that no one expected it. "And yes, it's like this:" He did the story. "
But last winter was marked by Dreßen. The memory of it is already "cool, but now it's good again." Finally, the new season is approaching and last winter "I can not buy anything anymore". However: the extra motivation is success so far. "Motivation is greater and when you succeed, it's no longer just a dream, it's realistic to be able to do it – and you want more," he says. But until that happens, Dreßen has to wait for a moment. The Alpine Ski World Cup starts next week with the glacier race in Sölden, Austria, the descent is only on 24./25. November tour.
