Kassenflop: China's most expensive film withdrawn from cinemas

After a disastrous opening weekend with revenues of less than seven million euros, the Chinese fantasy film "Asura" has been removed from cinemas in China. With a budget of 96 million euros, the film has been announced as the most expensive Chinese film production to date.

The official account of the film on the Chinese short message service Weibo apologized to the production team. and all the "Chinese and international contributors who have been involved in production over the last six years."

In Buddhism, the Asura are warlike demi-gods. The young Chinese star Wu Lei plays in the film the reincarnation of an Asura. At his side is the famous Chinese actress Zhang Yishang.

The studios behind the project do not want to give up completely. A representative of the production company Zhenjian Film told the Sina news agency that the decision to withdraw the film was not solely for financial reasons. They want to make some changes to the film and publish it again.
