Following the inauguration ceremony, construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2019, and production is expected to begin in early 2021. According to the Group, the additional sales potential of the new plant is estimated at around 1.8 billion euros a year. The new chip plant is approximately 60,000 square meters and the investment will be used to finance the new building, production facilities and cleanroom technology. A garage will also be built, offering 900 parking spaces.

The investment at the Villach site is justified by the "rapid growth of demand," said Reinhard Ploss, CEO of Infineon. International trends such as climate change or digitization have been the main drivers of this evolution. Power semiconductors would be used for example in electric vehicles, in battery powered network devices, data centers or in the production of renewable electricity. Power semiconductors are energy saving chips that most effectively control the flow of current in various applications.

The production of power semiconductors on thin slices of 300 millimeters has been developed at the Villach site. It was then extended to fully automated production at the Dresden site. The Group expects this production to be fully utilized by 2021.

Infineon has approximately 37,500 employees worldwide. During the fiscal year 2017 (late September), the company achieved a turnover of about 7.1 billion euros.
