Four members – three women and one man – were sentenced to 15 days in prison by the Russian punk political group "Pussy Riot" on Monday for protesting in the World Cup final in Moscow. In addition, they were banned from attending sporting events for three years.
The Moscow court accused the militants of "seriously violating the rules of behavior of the spectators" and therefore sentenced the defendants to the maximum penalty for this offense. The quartet played in the second half of the final Sunday night between France and Croatia (4: 2) in police uniform on the ground of the Moscow Lushnani stadium. The match had to be interrupted briefly, the security forces drag the troublemakers of the ground. These have not resisted. During the action, the head of the Russian state, Vladimir Putin, was in the stadium.
Pussy Riot pleaded in online social media to flitzer action and at the same time made several political demands. Among other things, all political prisoners should be released. The group also called for an end to peaceful protests. In addition, political competition in the country must be allowed.
Pussy Riot is best known for protesting in the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow in 2012, where they performed a "punk prayer" in which they openly criticized Putin. Because of "hooliganism" and "incitement to religious hatred," three band members were sentenced to two years in a labor camp. While one activist was suspended on probation, the other two were released only after 22 months.
