Surprisingly, Apple introduced new MacBook Pro models for 2018. Upgrades include not only the Intel Core's eighth-generation processors, but also the T2 chip, True Tone display and more. We'll see here it's worth going from the MacBookPro 2017 to the MacBook Pro 2018.

1. Processor: Big Performance Plus

The new MacBook Pro models feature eighth-generation Intel Core processors from Coffee Lake. The 13-inch model is based on quad-core chips, and the 15-inch MacBooks are standard with Intel Core i7 six-core chips. These deliver according to Apple up to 70% better performance. As an option, the 15-inch model is also available with an Intel Core i9 – the new flagship product from Intel, which rates up to 4.8 GHz.

Meanwhile, 13-inch models get quad-core chips of variants Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 processors have been the subject of a donation, which may represent twice as much than their predecessors. Especially in complex business applications, such as video editing, the performance of the new MacBooks are quite remarkable.

2. Graphics: Small Upgrade

The 15-inch models all feature a dedicated AMD graphics card with 4GB of GDDDR5 video memory. The MacBook Pro for 2800 Euro is a Radeon Pro 555X, the copy for 3300 Euro has a Radeon Pro 560X in the luggage. However, graphics cards are not much more powerful than their predecessors without "X" in the name. The MacBook Pro 13 receives the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 instead of the Iris Plus Graphics 650. Thanks to a higher clock and 128 MB instead of 64 MB eDRAM, the predecessor is slightly higher and offers the performance of an old graphics card input like the GeForce 930M or 940MX.

3. Display and Touch Bar: True-Tone Technology

The screen upgrade is rather minor. These are basically the same screens, only enriched with the familiar true-tone technology of iPads and iPhones. It adjusts the white balance to the ambient light, which allows to obtain a natural representation of the colors. Apart from this, all new MacBook Pro models include a Touch Bar and Touch ID fingerprint reader. The 13-inch model without Touch Bar 2017 is still available, but it has not been updated.

4. T2 Chip: For Security and Siri

In the new MacBook Pro models, the T2 chip is out of the Mac Pro. It has a secure enclave coprocessor for secure boot and encrypted storage. Also included are standalone controllers such as SSD, audio and microphones. Finally, the T2 chip brings the Siri voice badistant to the MacBook Pro, which opens applications, finds documents, answers questions or plays music.

5. More SSD and Memory

The SSDs in the new MacBook models, according to Apple read speeds of up to 3.2GB / s and write speeds of up to at 2.2 Gb / s. According to a benchmark test done by Laptopmag, it is the "fastest SSD ever installed on a laptop". The 13-inch model now has an optional capacity of up to 2TB, and the 15-inch model offers 4TB SSD storage. However, the surcharge for a 4 TB SSD storage instead of 2 TB is 3840 euros, while Apple is now on the faster DDR4 RAM instead of LPDDR3. In addition, the 15-inch model is now offered with up to 32GB of RAM instead of "only" 16GB.

6. Other: Larger battery, but same battery life

Bluetooth version 5.0 replaced 4.2. In addition, the new MacBook Pro models now have four Thunderbolt 3 ports. The battery capacity has indeed increased, but the running time has remained the same with up to ten hours of wireless navigation or playing iTunes movies. Finally, a new version of the Butterfly keyboard has been installed in the new MacBooks

7. Price: Same, but new highs

For the circumstances of the company, Apple shows almost generous, because the new MacBooks cost as much as their counterparts 2017, each with comparable features. On the rise, however, Apple has opened new equipment options, which means a matching surcharge. The highlight is probably 3840 euros more for a SSD memory of 4 TB instead of 2 TB. The top model now costs 7959 euros without software and Apple Care.

8. Conclusion: Above all, the higher power of the processor is a reason to buy

For most (professional) users, the most important reason for the new MacBook Pro models from 2018 is certainly the processor performance of the eighth generation Intel Core. Some will also appreciate the Siri or True Tone support, but face the price, only the increase in performance is likely to be the deciding factor.
