Klettwitz – On the test track DEKRA in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, there is a Tesla Model 3 Unmanned, autonomous piloted in "autopilot mode" for more than 28 hours, covering a range of 1001 kilometers with a load. "Directed" was the nextmove Tesla Model 3 white, the German leader in online car rental, by Spacy's mascot, Tesla Starman's little brother, who flies across the space in the Tesla Roadster. The unmanned electric car with a battery of 75 kWh (Model 3 Long Range) has achieved 23 kilometers more than an identical model 3 with changing human pilots sent on the track at the same time.

For safety reasons, we then used the DEKRA test area at the Lausitzring for risky action. "Of course, a test track with clear marks, long straight lines, long turns and some surprising influences offers almost ideal conditions for the Tesla autopilot," said Stefan Moeller, CEO of nextmove. "However, we did not know in advance if the autopilot would manage to cross the whole distance, even at night." Finally, Sunday afternoon, it was clear that the machine was doing its job like a clock with a great precision. The vehicle was finally "captured" in time and connected to reloading on the site.

To suggest to the autopilot that a person is sitting behind the wheel, they have an imaginative trick: Moeller started the car and positioned the tools to simulate a pilot in the Tesla Model 3. Then he came out the window with a little stop: nextmove made sure to get back in the vehicle at any time.

Tesla Model 3 on race track – how does it work?

In order not to lose too much aerodynamics, Moeller adheres to the Seitenfester accordingly. Spacy was sitting in the driver's seat – but was put on a mattress in the back seat folded to sleep for the drive in the night.

A second model 3 with identical equipment (long-range, 18-inch wheels, summer tires) started at the same time as the drivers changes in the race. In the end managed the inhabited vehicle with cruise control and temporary autopilot deployment 978 kilometers. Thus, this vehicle outbid the old distance record for a model 3 with driver. The old record known to the public was 975 kilometers, set up by an American team. Nevertheless, the pilots had to give up the efficiency of the battered unmanned vehicle: machine to hit the man.

The consumption of about 7 kWh / 100 km obtained with the Tesla Model 3 corresponds to about 0.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. This achievable consumption with e-cars shows the superiority of electric propulsion on internal combustion engines. The test vehicles are US versions imported from the Tesla 3 model. In Germany, the electric vehicle will be delivered in the first half of 2019.
