ÖAMTC: Narrow tires on safer snow – engine

"Vehicle manufacturers and car owners increasingly equip their vehicles with wider and wider tires," explains Friedrich Eppel, tire expert at ÖAMTC, explaining the motive for the survey as well as the reasons why 39, other European automobile badociations.

"In this respect, the test showed that the reduced dimensions of winter tires made safety much safer on snow and melted snow," confirms Eppel. "But the risk of aquaplaning in wet weather and slush is lower."

Although the wear of narrow tires is slightly higher, they are cheaper to buy. The larger dimension, on the other hand, offers the greatest advantage on dry roads. "The wider tire contact surface offers slightly increased driving safety and improved steering feel, which means they only show their true strength in good weather."

However, the test showed one thing: for larger tires, the use of snow chains is often not possible because they are generally not allowed in this dimension.

Test conditions

In order to weigh the pros and cons, the ÖAMTC compared five sizes of winter tires – 195/65 R15 H, 205/55 R16 H, 205/50 R17 H, 225/45 R17 H and 225/40 R18 V -. For the comparison of dimensions, the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 winter tire model was selected because this tire is available in all sizes with the same tread pattern and, depending on the manufacturer, the same rubber compound is used.
