Spielberg – In principle, four-wheel-drive vehicles were supposed to have moved into SUVs. They conquered the cities grove, often just with the proper look (and without 4×4). The iconic US Jeep can not get away with the Wrangler, which is not only symbolically considered the most successful mountaineer in the portfolio. The purpose of the new edition was to make the city look good, the marketing department characterizes the targeted audience as "Urban Jeepers."

The Wrangler ancestor, the Willys MB of the early 1940s, was a militarist who was not intended as a civilian. After the Second World War, however, he still civilized, especially in agriculture and forestry. As a CJ, he became popular not only across the Atlantic, but also wherever monsters off-road preferred real off-road vehicles. His successor from 1987 introduced the name Wrangler. As such, he has now reached Generation 4.

The new edition is deeper than the appearance suggests. The new outfit quotes the cheerfulness of the ancestor, the high body is almost unchanged, you can still lift the doors, fold down the windshield and – depending on the variant – disbademble the roof. The seven-lane grille with vertical slots is still there, as are the round headlights, the trapezoidal wheel arches and the mbadive bumpers. The interior, however, has only visual similarities with the original Jeep, quoting it as much as possible. There is dresser furniture, also in leather. The badpit is up to date, equipped with a TFT screen (3.5 or 7 inches tall). The dashboard is nicely decorated. A "Media Center" – as the FCA Group's Ami department calls – with a 7 or 8.4 inch touchscreen is just as lacking as the possibilities of Internet networking via smartphone integration.

There are also new engines: a 2.2-liter diesel engine developing 200 horsepower (and 450 Nm), a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine developing 270 horsepower (and 400 Nm), both coupled to a new eight-speed automatic torque converter.

When it comes to driving comfort, the Wrangler is practically Europeanized. Compared to his predecessor, who had already abandoned his leaf suspension, he almost completely walked and rolled, the feeling of direction is much more precise. Blatant is the difference even before with terrain grobstolligen tires in conjunction with tight off-road equipment. Because Jeep stays at the equipment graduation "Sport", "Sahara" and "Rubicon", of course, including all-wheel drive, in different forms, up to the system with reduction ratios and locks of differential. Even the most professional 4×4 equipment controls the two-wheel drive (rear), so as not to drive fuel consumption – on the asphalt – to excessive heights.

But this was not really the subject of the first test. As the field has served the vast and varied off-road terrain – Gaal – just above the Red Bull Ring. The most sought-after type of Wrangler was the short, two-door Rubicon version. The only disappointment he received was that even in the greasiest mud, there was no need to resort to locks. Whatever the challenges ahead – the gradients, the slopes, the entanglements, the stick, the stone and the root system – the Ami mills are themselves insensitive even to those impbadibilities that you do not want to tackle on foot. And if that's the case, then do it on all fours.

The launch on the Austrian market dates back to October. Prices are not fixed yet, they will not be lower. But it is clear that the beginning is done with the 2.2 liters. The two-liter gasoline will follow this year. There will be a plug-in hybrid in 2020.
