Online shopping does not stop at sports

2.8 billion euros are spent annually for sporting goods – and more only in specialty stores. Other industries are also fighting for the lucrative market. And purchases are becoming more and more online.

According to the figures of RegioData, Austria is a nation of sports enthusiasts. At least, Austrians can cost a lot of sports equipment and clothing: 283 euros were spent on average per person last year – a sharp increase over the previous year, according to the firm of advice.

E-bikes as bestsellers

E-bikes have proven to be lucrative for the sports trade. According to RegioData, more than 300,000 e-bikes are currently used in Austria. According to figures published in the spring by the Association of Sporting Goods Manufacturers and Sporting Goods Suppliers in Austria (VSSÖ), 120,000 of them were sold to the 39, last year only. However, retailers can continue to rely on outdoor sports such as rock climbing, hiking and ski touring – an "eternal favorite," says RegioData

Other industries are pushing on the market

The lucrative market is no longer solely in the hands of specialized retailers. Only about 60% of sales are attributable to conventional sporting goods stores. Other industries, such as food distribution, have also taken the bandwagon. According to RegioData, recipes are also increasingly paid to "Amazon and Co".

This is also reflected in the growing importance of e-commerce. Nearly a fifth of total sales in the sporting goods sector comes from online sales. "The majority of large stationary retailers in the industry already have online shops," writes the consulting firm

Tourism is an Important Factor
