Wolfsburg He was right after his Named in mid-April. As announced the CEO of VW Herbert Diess, 59, there will be a future COO in the Volkswagen brand. An operations manager who is responsible for the daily operations of the brand – and who keeps his own back free.
The search took almost four months and now the new one has been fixed. Ralf Brandstätter, 49, was appointed effective August 1 for the new VW office, the Wolfsburg officially announced on Tuesday.
Brandstätter is not unknown at VW, he comes from his own ranks. He has held various positions within the Group since 1993. For nearly three years, he has been Director of Responsible Purchasing for the Volkswagen brand. Diess and Brandstätter know each other very well. Since the resignation of Francisco García Sanz Brandstätter also leads the purchase of the transitional group.
With the appointment of ZF's former CEO Stefan Sommer to the new purchasing committee, however, Brandstätter retires from this position and takes on the new COO position at the Volkswagen Brand. He remains both director of the brand's purchases
Nevertheless, the appointment of Brandstätter as a branded COO has not been fully indisputed internally. Because Diess's favorite for this position was Arno Antlitz, 48, CFO of the Volkswagen brand and close confidant of the new CEO.
Diess had strong allies for this staff proposal: the families of owners Porsche and Piëch were also pronouncing in favor of Antlitz, according to the circles of the supervisory board.
But even this influential support did not ultimately help the brand's CFO. After all, the Brandstätter group was stronger, the bank of workers headed by the powerful chairman of the board of directors, Bernd Osterloh, leading the way. Osterloh was pronounced against Antlitz as a new COO brand a few weeks ago.
Brandstätter is considered close to the union – probably because he has never completely forgotten his origin. Because before his studies as an industrial engineer, the native of Braunschweiger had started in the hierarchy at the very bottom of Volkswagen – with an apprenticeship as a mechanic.
It can still live well with Brandstätter as a new COO brand, after all he is also a tactician. In filling in the next, the most important position in the group, he should urge that then just pbad his candidate.
