Ryanair: Green light for the replenishment of Laudamotion

Brussels has no problem of competition

The European Commission announced Thursday evening that it had no competition concerns with regard to the majority takeover of the Austrian airline Laudamotion by Irish Ryanair. This gave the green light.

Ryanair will now increase the stake from 24.9% to 75%. Niki Lauda continues to own a quarter through her private foundation. However, the Irish have also got an option to buy on this stock. Michael O. Leary recently said that his company would not be able to withdraw this option for three years at the earliest and that it would be "very expensive for Ryanair".

Lauda will chair Laudamotion in the future, while management should remain in the hands of Andreas Gruber. The way in which tasks are distributed in detail has never been communicated concretely.

Laudamotion and Ryanair have different ground handling partners in many airports, which can occasionally lead to the pbadenger shipment from the Ryanair counter to the Austrian subsidiary. Laudamotion is positioning itself as a second brand within the Ryanair-Konzers and here – unlike the third brand Ryanair Sun – expresses its autonomous presence in the market.

Cooperating, however, in many areas, for example, selling tickets via the Internet. Laudamotion should however – unlike Ryanair – turn more and more to the future on sales of GDS. The corresponding software interfaces that will make this possible should already be in progress.

The most obvious difference between the two companies however remains that Ryanair does not intend to supplement, or even replace, the Boeing fleet with a sample from another manufacturer. At Laudamotion, they rely on Airbus and want to quickly expand the inventory to more than 50 units of the A320 family.
