Doctors and the Ministry of Health advise against vaccination against influenza. Country Sanitätsdirektor Wolfgang Grabher recommends the use of the quadruple vaccine. According to VGKK, there are already more than 1,000 new cases of influenza per week.

With the flat and wet season, the number of sick days increases. In addition to influenza infections, there are already many cases of "true" flu, so flu. In order to avoid an infection, or at least alleviate the symptoms, doctors are recommending the flu shot again this year. Durchimpfrate is still weak. Not even ten percent of Vorarlbergers can be vaccinated.

The flu season has started: recommended vaccination

For Landessanitätsdirektor Grabher, everyone should be vaccinated against the flu, so the "real" flu. Unlike influenza infections, the course of influenza was significantly worse. Especially for the elderly or with an underlying disease, influenza can be life threatening.

According to general practitioner Markus Albrecht, it makes sense that young people who travel a lot – abroad, at train stations and airports – are vaccinated against influenza as they are at increased risk of infection.

Four subtypes of influenza in the vaccine

In total, five providers published a vaccine this year. Doctors and the Ministry of Health recommend this year to use the quadruple vaccine. This includes two influenza A strains and two B strains, says Grabher. This means that four subtypes of influenza are already included. The previous year, 60% of all influenza illnesses were caused by a type B. This is now included for the first time in quadruple vaccines.

Already up to 1500 new cases a week

According to Grabher, now is the time to get the flu shot. According to the Vorarlberger Gebietskrankenkbade, there are already between 1,000 and 1,500 new cases each week. The peak reaches the flu wave, according to the experience of the beginning of the year. So the protection is already established. However, the vaccine does not protect against flu infections.

In addition, the vaccine must be refreshed every year, says Grabher. The flu virus is making a big change, so the viruses from the previous year have already changed slightly this year. Therefore, the vaccines should be adjusted each year.

For children aged 6 months to 18 years, it is possible to administer the vaccine by nasal spray. However, this variant costs a little less than 50 euros.
