Second generation – Audi A1: cutting edge and masculine

The youngest are as sporty as the big ones at Audi. This is already checked in the compact segment – see A3. Now it was the smallest corner of Ingolstadt. After nearly eight years of service, the A1 begins its second generation.

In 2010, the four-ring brand had innovated with him, the small car, and had entered this three- or five-door model with an emphasis on sportsmanship. But apparently, according to Ingolstadt, it is not clear enough: the small Audianer has mainly captured the hearts of female customers (share above 50%). It remains to be seen if this speaks volumes about sportsmanship.

Like the quattro sport

Whatever the case may be, Benjamin is now entering his new model phase with a sharper and finer cut. Audi calls the "male" optical claim, comes back
female heart (roundness). This is emphasized by the sharply cut LED light signatures on the front and rear lights, the more prominent grille, the enlarged air intakes, the shortened forks at the front and rear and the underscore of Breitspurigkeit. The stains on the i are three horizontal vents directly under the hood. This should – see sportsmanship – recall the good old quattro sport of 1984.

The base of the new A1 is the platform of the group MQB (Modular Transverse Box) of the category A0. This is the one, which is built in Martorell (near Barcelona), and only as five-door Sportback (the three-door coupe is outdated because less convenient), for close relatives of the current versions of the Seat Ibiza and the VW Polo.

Longer and lower

The second career stage was accompanied by growth: 56 millimeters long, 34 millimeters wide and 94 millimeters long. In height, it was squeezed by 13 millimeters. This results in the current dimensions 4,030 x 1,740 x 1,410 mm in length x width x height and 2,600 mm in the wheelbase. The volume of the cargo hold has increased: it is now 65 liters more than before, from 335 liters. A maximum of 1,090 liters of luggage behind the hatchback – two aircraft cabin carts, laptops and purses come out.

In a superficial way, a problem, whether female or male, was already inside. In the new version, it is even more geared toward the driver, with the inclined information units of the pilot – or the pilot. This affects both the digital dashboard behind the valance and the infotainment and navigation touch screen. The latter can reach 10.1 inches, depending on the MMI system configuration. This is a legacy of the flagship A8, as well as the optional – but in the
Reduced size A1 (at 10.1 inches) – virtual badpit. However, the operation is not completely scanned, there are still some controls and buttons for automatic climate control (surcharge) or driving mode selection (if the optional driving selection system is integrated).

Always with particle filter

The sports car now relies exclusively on a petrol turbo engine with particulate filter and Euro 6d Temp compatibility. The well-known other products of the VW group, the three-cylinder 1.0 liter, develops 95 or 116 hp (25 TFSI or 30 TFSI). The first performance rating will be submitted as a basic engine. The more powerful 1.0 liter delivers powerful power, but does not stay acoustic in the foreground – which is best in combination with a manual shift.

The four cylinders are also proven with a capacity of 1.5 liter (35 TFSI) of 150 hp with cylinder deactivation and more than solid propulsion capability. The 2.0 liter (40 TFSI) with its 200 hp seems somewhat smothered at first. Perhaps the stringent emission regulations in effect will weigh on temperament. For transmissions, Audi offers a five- or six-speed manual gearbox for manual 1.0-liter six-speed transmissions for 1.5-liter and 2.0-speed direct-to-six-speed gearboxes. For all other engines, you can order a DSG in seven steps.

Tight but not uncomfortable
