Starting in 2019, advertising will appear in status updates.

[ad_1]

WhatsApp's free email becomes a business: with "WhatsApp Business" for iOS, the Facebook affiliate wants to ask business customers to check out. As of 2019, there should be advertising in WhatsApp Messenger. This has now been officially confirmed by Facebook.

The "normal" version of WhatsApp should soon generate benefits for the company: from the beginning of 2019, users will find more and more advertising in their status updates, as is already the case in Facebook Messenger . WhatsApp confirmed it Wednesday. The time of use without advertising are thus soon finished. Chris Daniels, vice president of Facebook, has officially confirmed the commercial launch of "WhatsApp Status" on Wednesday, reported "Watson.de". With WhatsApp Status, users can share animated text, photos, videos, and animated GIFs that automatically disappear after 24 hours.

Only five years after the purchase of the messenger via Facebook, advertising is possible. The purchase agreement previously prohibited monetization.

In a few days, "WhatsApp Business" will be launched for iOS. This brings Chip.de back and refers to his own sources. Until now, WhatsApp Business was only available for Android.

Through the application, companies can connect with their customers and offer an alternative to often overloaded call centers. Similar customer discussions are also available in Facebook Messenger. Many companies develop what are called chatbots, which can automatically answer customer questions. So it takes fewer employees in customer service.

WhatsApp Business can be downloaded for free. But it is already clear that WhatsApp wants to make money with this service, for example via progressive subscription models. For example, fees could be calculated based on the number of customers that the company wants to reach with the service.

According to Chip.de, three million companies in Europe use WhatsApp. For example, KLM sends out boarding cards and tickets via WhatsApp and answers questions from customers. For privacy advocates, however, this poses some legal issues: The use of WhatsApp in the course of the transaction could constitute a violation of the European General Data Protection Regulation (DSGVO). Facebook's subsidiary, WhatsApp, seems to be getting closer to the parent company: about the "Linked Accounts" feature, data from WhatsApp users could in the future be pbaded on to the social media giant.

WhatsApp should finally be profitable – and will probably change drastically soon. Manufacturers obviously provide not only advertising and fees for business customers, but also closer cooperation with the parent company Facebook.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that in the background, a feature called "Linked Accounts" works, so "linked accounts". It's an interface to Facebook and Instagram, which also belongs to the group.

According to social media expert Christian Erxleben, Facebook wants to tap into another valuable source of data. The group could use this information to create even more detailed user profiles. Facebook earns its money almost exclusively through the placement of targeted ads.

WhatsApp and Instagram have long been part of the Facebook group. Gathering user data is not so easy. This has technical reasons as well as data protection reasons. According to the EU rules, companies are only allowed to transmit user data to third parties under strict conditions. Last year, Facebook had to pay a fine to the EU because the group had secretly exchanged user data between its two departments after the WhatsApp acquisition.

According to Johannes Caspar, head of data protection in Hamburg, WhatsApp and Facebook have systematically violated the European Data Protection General Regulation (DSGVO) since at least 2018. The messaging service works more closely with Facebook, as many know. users.

Facebook had bought the app in 2014 for around $ 22 billion – with the promise that WhatsApp should be maintained as a stand-alone service. But since the founders left their seat at the top of the company, Facebook and WhatsApp continue to approach.

"Linked Accounts" could be the next badet of the social media giant. The feature should allow users to link their accounts to Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. With this, they automatically give their consent to the exchange of data.

What is it about: The previously heavy and perhaps even illegal data exchange between Facebook and WhatsApp should be made compatible with DSGVO with the help of an "extra feature". In addition, businesses can more easily advertise on all three channels simultaneously: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Do not miss any digital news: follow t-online.de Digital on Facebook or twitter,

WhatsApp and Facebook will strive to highlight the benefits of such an account. The decision ultimately belongs to the user. Enjoy the "Linked Accounts" feature but especially Facebook and advertising agencies, writes Erxleben in the blog "Basic Thinking".

(Source: Getty Images / hocus-focus)A woman discusses on WhatsApp: users must save their data by October 30th. Backups that have not been renewed for a year will be deleted. (Source: hocus-focus / Getty Images)

As previously announced, the backup settings for WhatsApp will soon be changed on Android smartphones. Users should take a moment to check their settings, otherwise there is a risk of data loss.

WhatsApp will change its backup feature on November 12th. From this date, Android users will have unlimited storage for their backups through a partnership with Google Drive. However, as part of the transition, all backups older than one year old that have not been updated since will be deleted.

Users had time to adjust and secure their data before. This period will expire after the information from "Chip.de" tomorrow. The deadline is October 30th. Then the delete action begins.

When used intensively, a backup copy of all chats, voicemails, videos, and images may take several gigabytes (GB). Until now, this storage volume has counted for the 15 GB that every Google Drive user is entitled to.

The Google Drive backup feature is optional for users. You can also disable them in the settings, but also risk losing all WhatsApp data if you lose your mobile phone. Security experts warn that data will be stored unencrypted on Google Drive. So, if you place importance on confidentiality, you must disable this feature.

All others are called to know when they have backed up their data and, if necessary, to renew the backup. To do this, select the "Chat" menu in the settings, select the "Save conversation" option, then click "Save." All data will be stored on Google Drive.

WhatsApp starts with stickers – and that's what they look like

After the Facebook Messenger, Telegram and other messengers, WhatsApp also receives animated stickers. These are offered as theme packages, some must be paid.

One of the next updates will include the sticker feature that many already know about Facebook Messenger. Stickers are animated characters, similar to emoticons, that each manufacturer can use himself. These are usually offered as thematic packages. Some are free, others cost a few cents or euros. Apparently, many iPhone users can already receive WhatsApp stickers, but have not yet the option to send them.

WhatsApp apparently wants to unlock the feature little by little, it will not be available immediately after the next update. There should be static and animated stickers in WhatsApp.

A cup is the beginning

The operation of the stickers is simple: you tap on a symbol to the left of the input field, which looks like a sticker and selects a sticker. The preloaded "theme" is an animated mug, with a plus symbol, you can add more packages. These can be installed via the respective App Store. This is to give in the future also paid offers.

With stickers, it's even easier to express emotions than with emoticons. You can also set favorites and save the last stickers used.

However, users must be careful: in the past, fraudsters had repeatedly tried to lure subscribers into subscription traps with the promise of animated emojis. These fake offers are usually sent by channel. The user is prompted to forward the message to his friends. This is often the sign that it is a non-serious offer.

The first stickers were designed by the designers of WhatsApp and other artists. The company also invites third-party developers to develop their own collections and to offer them via an interface (API) in the application. According to a WhatsApp spokesperson, the stickers should be available for download in the app stores in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp becomes practical Google Maps feature

With a new WhatsApp feature, you can share your own location via Google Maps and indicate the time of arrival. WhatsApp also gets another new feature.

Many messages on WhatsApp are identical: "When do you arrive?" Or: "I will come later". This could be different in the future. Because Google Maps users can share their estimated time of arrival with their contacts after an update, while browsing. This is calculated and corrected live, for example in case of bottling.

To do this, tap the bottom white margin in the navigation view, then tap "split route". It works not only during navigation in the car, but also during running or cycling.

Full guidance can also be shared via WhatsApp. It works well on other messengers, such as Facebook Messenger.

New comfort features on WhatsApp

Even with WhatsApp, there is news: the continuous voice messages are now played one after the other, so that the user does not have to type each message individually.

In addition, message processing should now be easier. By pressing and holding a message, they can now forward, reply, delete, copy, or highlight.

Experts strongly recommend updating WhatsApp

Due to a serious deficiency, security experts strongly recommend downloading the latest version of WhatsApp. Billions of users are running the risk of hacking their smartphone.

Who has WhatsApp on the phone, should urgently check if the latest version of the application is installed. The company has released new versions for iOS (October 3) and Android (September 28) in the last few days. Google's Project Zero software experts found that they were always looking for vulnerabilities.

According to experts, Natali Silvanovich, a bug in the code allowed to smuggle other programs on the smartphone. A special video call would be enough.

Silvanovich has documented this by crushing WhatsApp in this way. The possibilities for hackers with bad intentions go much further, it could be smuggled about spy programs.

The current version for Android smartphones is version 2.18.302, for version 2.18.93 iPhones. Who has these versions on his smartphone, is apparently no longer affected by the vulnerability. Many users update their apps only rarely.

Advertising could start in early 2019

According to a clause of the purchase agreement, WhatsApp must not earn money until the beginning of 2019. This period expires in a little less than three months. Users fear a flood of advertising in Messenger and a softening of encryption.

Facebook manager Carolyn Everson has indirectly confirmed her intention to "advertise in rotation" in the application. She is Vice President of Global Marketing Strategies at Facebook and responsible for future advertising at WhatsApp.

She told a recruitment panel: "Advertising for growing businesses is not inconsistent with people, and I think it's a good thing for our company, and at WhatsApp, we've been very cautious and slow on this issue. "

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton recently criticized WhatsApp for weakening end-to-end encryption for the promotion. Thus, the group could also have access to cats in order to use keywords to broadcast appropriate advertisements. WhatsApp has not commented on the allegations so far, but apparently does not wish to change the form of encryption.

How to silence boring group discussions

How to disable annoying WhatsApp groups without offending other members with an automatic message? On a small detour works.

In principle, there is no way to leave a group in secret. Because the other members always have an indication of who turned their backs on the band. One way out of this awkward situation: Group alerts can be turned off for a while. Although messages from group members continue to be routed to the smartphone, you get nothing more, because the phone no longer rings and vibrates.

On Android devices, open each group and tap the group topic, tap Warn Sound, and then choose the mute time, such as a year, week, or eight hours.

If you want to be completely quiet from the boring group, do not forget to also disable the item "Show Notifications" so that there is no indication of news from the group at the time. 39; screen.

For iOS devices, the mute function is very similar: open a group, tap Group topic, and select Mute followed by the desired duration.

Android Spyware reads WhatsApp messages

a An "infected" bugdroid: security researchers have discovered a Trojan that can read WhatsApp messages. (Source: Britta Pedersen / dpa)

G DATA antivirus provider warns of new malware for Android devices. The program can access, among other things, the camera or WhatsApp messages.

Currently, security experts are reporting a new threat to Android devices: malware identified as "Android.Trojan-Spy.Buhsam.A" can access many sensitive information stored on infected devices. For example, malware can take control of the camera or spy on information about stored bookmarks or contacts. Even the WhatsApp chat history can read malicious software and send it to its developers. This is reported by the G DATA antivirus.

The malicious program was discovered by security researcher Lukas Stefanko of the ESET antivirus group. In a tweet, Stefanko calls, among other things, a fake "Viber" chat application, through which the malware is distributed.

According to G DATA, the malware is still in development. When the service starts, users receive the message "Service started". Usually, malware tries to work unrecognized. Hauke Gierow, security expert at G-DATA, suspects that "the unfinished malware has probably been accidentally released for the moment."

To protect against malware, Gierow generally recommends that users download apps from the Google Play Store. In general, Google checks software downloaded on their portal. Nevertheless, Trojans and others are still on the platform. Gierow recommends paying attention to the reviews: "Users look better because there are also apps with fake reviews," says the security expert. "In India and China, for example, there are people who write incorrect appraisals all day long."

In addition, users should check the company name of the publisher of an application and look for the required permissions. For example, if a flashlight application wants to access memory or contacts, you should be careful.

Better for the eyes: Does WhatsApp go dark?

The popular WhatsApp email service is supposed to receive a dark mode that protects the eyes. However, it is still unclear when the function is ready for use.

According to information from the Twitter account "@WABetaInfo", specializing in WhatsApp news, Facebook's subsidiary is working on a "dark mode" for the courier service. This would allow users to switch between a bright background and a dark background in the future. The competitors of WhatsApp, Threema and Telegram have been offering this option for some time.

Especially at night, it is advisable to activate the dark mode, so that the display disappears less quickly. But even during the day, the dark background should spare the eyes. White wallpapers, on the other hand, have a stimulating effect and should even be responsible for falling asleep.

With the new smartphones with bright OLED screens, the dark mode offers, according to "Chip.de", the advantage of protecting the battery by a black background.

It is still unclear to what extent the development of the function has progressed – or even completed. "WABetaInfo" bases its premature announcement on "important clues in recent updates" without giving details. WhatsApp has not yet confirmed the rumors.

"Hello, I am using WhatsApp"

Was sind beliebte Status-Meldungen?

This feature is currently used by approximately 450 million people.

At the same time, Idema announced that it would generate revenue through cooperation with large companies.

To get in touch with businesses, users should accept the communication, Idema said. This would also help to implement the requirements of the European General Data Protection Regulation.

For businesses, the configuration of the interface and the discussion with the customers are free. At the exact price, the company has made no statement.

Users themselves are not asked to pay.
