It has long been known that sweet sodas are not good for your health. Especially women should better abstain. As Spanish researchers have shown in a study, there is a link between the consumption of sugary drinks and the incidence of bad cancer.

And soft drinks seem to increase the risk of bad cancer, as Spanish researchers have discovered.

Risk Factors for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer, also known as bad cancer, is the most common malignancy in women. In Germany alone, up to 70,000 new cases are counted each year.

As with most other cancers, the root causes are unknown. However, some risk factors for bad cancer are known.

Among other things, the risk increases with age, family history, genetic changes and smoking. In addition, a lot of body fat, more frequent consumption of processed meat and high cholesterol levels are badociated with an increased risk of bad cancer.

In addition, higher insulin resistance may lead to an increased risk of bad cancer, according to researchers at the University of Navarra in Pamplona (Spain) in the journal "European Journal of Nutrition".

Important hormone

The human body needs the hormone insulin to absorb the sugar present in the blood after eating in the body's cells, where it is then consumed.

However, when the body no longer responds optimally to insulin, becoming resistant to insulin, it is called insulin resistance.

There are several possible causes, responsible for the development of insulin resistance.

Among other factors, dietary factors play a role, and especially the consumption of sweetened non-alcoholic beverages such as cola, soda or iced tea.

Soft drinks can increase insulin resistance

Spanish scientists also write that sugary drinks are a recognized factor in increasing insulin resistance.

However, the link between these drinks and bad cancer has not been widely studied.

In their study, the experts therefore examined the relationship between soft drink consumption and the incidence of bad cancer among relatively young women.

Data from more than 10,000 university graduates badyzed

The researchers badyzed data from a total of 10,713 Spanish graduates (aged 33 years on average) from the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) cohort.

All participants were without bad cancer at the beginning of the study.

At the beginning of the study, the consumption of sugary drinks by the subjects was recorded with the aid of a nutritional questionnaire.

The incidence of bad cancer has been confirmed by a qualified oncologist based on medical records.

More diseases in postmenopausal women

During the observation period, 100 women contracted bad cancer.

The researchers found that in postmenopausal women, regular consumption of sugary drinks was badociated with a much higher incidence of bad cancer than women who had never or rarely consumed such drinks.

In premenopausal women, no badociation was found.

The authors of the study conclude that, although the number of cases was low, a direct correlation was observed between the consumption of sugary drinks and the risk of bad cancer in postmenopausal women.

Nevertheless, other larger longitudinal studies are needed to prove this connection. (Ad)
