In many countries, SIM cards installed directly on the smartphone, tablet or smartwatch are already standard. Thus, the card must not be inserted manually and the rate can be activated directly on the device. In Germany, some tablets and smartwatches with eSIM are already supported by mobile service providers. But it is only now that the foreseeable end of the traditional SIM card in Germany has really started. As a result, customers of T-Mobile and tele.ring can now use the eSIM with their existing mobile phone rates in an appropriate smartphone at no additional charge. In a few years, there will only be devices with eSIM.

It works like that
On an eSIM compatible device, such as the iPhone XS (Max) and from October 26, the iPhone XR, the activation works at T-Mobile as if by magic: hold the l? phone camera with a QR code and the mobile phone tariff is activated. eSIM of the smartphone played. New iPhones can memorize multiple eSIM profiles (tariffs / call numbers), but only one eSIM profile can be used. The dual card feature offered by Apple on the new iPhone XS (Max) and iPhone XR also allows the simultaneous use of two mobile phone rates on an iPhone. According to a list published by Apple (link below), T-Mobile Austria is the only mobile operator in Austria on 24 October 2018, where the dual SIM function can be used with eSIM. The conversion of an existing fare into eSIM and the use of eSIM are free.

Currently, the feature is not yet available. Because in Austria, dual SIM will be marketed later this year by a software update, according to Apple. Once the update is installed, the features of T-Mobile and tele.ring's clients can be used on new iPhones. Important: T-Mobile and tele.ring value card rates, as well as UPC Mobile fares, can not be used with eSIM.
