Six people, including children, died as a result of a fire in the heart of the Swiss city of Solothurn. The incorrect handling of a cigarette led, according to the police, to the fire of a multi-unit building. One person was arrested.

When the firefighters were alerted at 2:10, the whole building was in smoke, said Boris Anderegg, Solothurn fire brigade commander: "Many people stood at the window to scream for help." Many people were said to have been saved and it was only later that he was killed. "It was a very dramatic mission," said the commander of the fire department.

A resident noticed smoke

A resident had noticed the smoke in the stairwell and had sounded the alarm. Firefighters left with a large contingent. The old multi-family four-storey house near the old town of Solothurn had more than twenty people. Most of them put the firefighters to the shelter by ladders.

For six people, all help arrived too late. Among them are children. Victims were not identified Monday night. Before and in the house, there were dramatic scenes during the night. A woman dropped her child, according to reports in the fourth-floor press. A young resident from the next house was able to catch the child.

Devastating fire

The devastating fire originated on a lower floor and generated thick smoke. This has spread throughout the building. The fire completely destroyed the ground floor. According to preliminary findings, the fire was allegedly caused by mishandling of smokers, as stated by the Swiss authorities. The police temporarily arrested a person.

It is one of the most serious fires with deaths in Switzerland. In the early evening, there were still four residents of the house seriously injured in the hospital.
