On the trail of counterfeit money, the security forces repeatedly report their success in the fight against counterfeiters. It is only recently that investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the State of Bavaria (LKA) have guaranteed a nominal value of € 100,000 and have detained three suspects. "Due to the educational work of the Bundesbank and the police investigation, the numbers of counterfeit money in Germany are relatively low," says Johannes Beermann, a member of the board of directors of the Bundesbank. "From a purely mathematical point of view, there are currently about seven counterfeit bills per 10,000 population per year."
Counterfeiters and currency experts compete in a sort of race. Central banks issue invoices with changed security features – criminals try to copy them. "Counterfeiters are able to adapt quickly to new requirements," notes the Federal Bureau of Criminal Police (BKA) in its latest report on counterfeit money
. Criminals must still not be sure: False is, at some point, the truth is revealed. According to Beermann, there are several levels of security "
According to the Bundesbank, it is difficult for criminals to do their job. "Until now, for example, counterfeiters did not reproduce the portrait window well," says Stefan Hardt, head of the Bundesbank's Treasury Department.
The special nature of paper is also a major obstacle for counterfeiters. the difference, "says Hardt. The different security features should allow every citizen to recognize the authenticity of a bill without any help.
In the first half, banks, retailers and police in Germany withdrew about 31 100 euros of flowers from circulation. This is down 6.2% from the second half of 2017 and 21.6% from the same period last year. Arithmetic loss estimated by the Bundesbank at 1.8 million euros – with a downward trend. The person taking the flower should stay upright. They are mainly resellers or restaurateurs. Counterfeit money will not be replaced.
The 50 euro bill remains the most popular with criminals. Of the blooms recorded in Germany in the first half of the year, 22,504 were fake – mostly counterfeit banknotes of the old series. "As soon as a new version of a bill is announced, counterfeiters reinforce the old ones on the market," reports Beermann
. The central banks of the common currency area presented to the people the rechaped invoice of 50 euros beginning of April 2017. The 20 revised ones were published at the end of November 2015. Above all, the transparent portrait window and the emerald number, which changes color when the ticket is flipped, is an obstacle for counterfeiters.
The number of flowers has also decreased in Europe. From January to June, 301,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were discovered – 17.1% lower than in the second half of 2017. According to the European Central Bank (ECB), more than 21 billion euro banknotes are currently worth more than 1.1. Trillions of euros in circulation
Imitations of larger bills should soon become more difficult for fraudsters. The 100 euro and 200 euro banknote with improved security features is expected to be put into circulation in the first half of 2019.
However, according to BKA estimates, a counterfeiter does not generally attempt to produce all the elements of security. "According to a cost-benefit principle, it usually only makes the effort it deems necessary to circulate the falsification." The laity could therefore recognize most flowers by checking several security features. The Bundesbank advises to carefully check banknotes according to the "feel-see-tip" principle.
Sometimes, however, trashy stuff is enough. According to the Bundesbank, the fraudsters have recently relieved a couple aged 400,000 euros. They offered to more than 70 years – allegedly for protection against burglars – black 500 euro bills to exchange for real bank notes. With a special chemical, black notes should be brought down to "normal" 500s. When the couple noticed the fraud, the criminals with their prey were already over the mountains.
