According to an international study, a healthy Mediterranean diet, rich in high-fat fish such as salmon, trout and sardines, can have a positive effect on the lung function of children with asthma. Already two meals a week decreased the signs of inflammation of the airways.
"We already know that a diet high in fat, sugar and salt can affect the development and progression of asthma in children and we now have evidence that symptoms can be contained in a healthy food, "said lead author Maria Papamichael of La Trobe University in Melbourne. "Our study shows that only two fish meals a week can significantly reduce inflammation in asthmatic children."

Asthma is the most common respiratory disease among young people and one of the leading causes of emergency treatment and hospitalization in children. The study involved 64 children from Athens aged five to twelve with mild asthma. They were divided into two groups, one of which should receive at least 150 grams of fish twice a week. The children in the second group did not change their diet. Six months later, they were screened for pulmonary function and airway inflammation, and results from both groups were compared.
