In Cannes, "Happy as Lazzaro" received the Best Screenplay Award. In Vienna, the film opens today, Thursday, at the Viennale, next week, he comes to the cinema.
This is a magical and realistic film featuring an Italian girl who opens the first Viennale of new director Eva Sangiorgi today: "Happy as Lazzaro", directed by Alice Rohrwacher, takes place in an isolated hamlet near Rome , where Conditions prevail: the Marquise de Luna ruled with an iron fist over their domain, on the slaves of the workers as serfs. At the center of the film is the young Lazzaro, who is exploited by all but never loses his trust and charity. "Happy as Lazzaro" is a programmatic opening film of the Viennale, in which films and filmmakers from around the world travel to Vienna for two weeks.
At the beginning of this film was indeed a real case, which took place in the eighties. How was it? Alice Rohrwacher: Yes, the inspiration for this movie is an article that I read in a magazine while I was still in school. It was a small incident that was the subject of much clbad discussion. But many small items of this kind can be found in the newspaper and forgotten the next day, about how the privileged take advantage of their position and exploit other people. What the Marquise de Luna does, how she uses her power, is actually very common, a universal mechanism. The starting point was therefore this case, which challenged me to tell a political story. But then, the figure of Lazzaro appeared and completed the film with this dimension non religious but religious.
How did it happen, where did the character come from? We reflected on the universal and international significance of this story and found that it took a certain amount of lightness to do so. So we created a figure so innocent that it seems almost ridiculous, a person so pure that it is revolutionary and radical in all its purity.
He is not the usual hero of cinema undergoing a development arc. He is good from beginning to end, even in a world that is changing suddenly, he can not change and that makes the transformation of the world even clearer.
Adriano Tardiolo, the actor of Lazzaro, looks like innocence personified, to an angel of the Renaissance. That's right, it looks like it's coming from another era. Of course, Adriano is a modern teenager, but what he shares with Lazzaro is an unconditional trust in his neighbor and that he always wants to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. It is unusual to find someone like that. This is not a movie about an idiot or a simpel, it's a movie about a saint. The boundary between these two categories is often thin.
Italy has a great tradition in the fight against poverty and cinema clbades. Are there any movies that influenced you? Talking about inspiration is always difficult because there is a lot of unintentional inspiration too, probably more than expected. The unintentional is here in the best sense of the term, because a good cinema creates memories in us and we often do not realize that it comes from movies. There are certainly a lot of models I do not know, so I can not really talk about it.
Films dealing with clbad and clbad struggle have become rare. The clbad struggle still exists. But unfortunately, the rich have already won. This war also takes place within the clbad: the Marchesa exploits the peasants and the workers, but the workers in turn exploit Lazzaro. In the end, everyone exploits someone, not just Lazzaro.
Is this pure kindness something that exists close to nature rather than in the city? I do not think it has to do with the city or the country. I love people no matter where they come from, they are all in the same situation and that's what I see. The good is like a wild flower, it can bloom in a field, but also in an asphalt bump.
