Autumn is here – and so is the Viennale period. From October 25 to November 8, Vienna will again be in the name of the cinema. The film festival is taking place for the first time under the direction of the new director of the Viennale, Eva Sangiorgi, who has just lifted the separation between feature film and documentary. Alice T.

"Alice T." by Radu Muntean is a Romanian drama about the arrival at the middle age of a 17-year-old rebel who decides to give birth to her child. The director tells the uncertainty of a young person for whom every day represents a new challenge. Leading actress Andra Guţi has been named best actress in Locarno.

Angelo

This is not a movie you will quickly forget. That's what director Markus Schleinzer said about his latest work "Angelo", which has already been shown in Toronto and San Sebastian. This is conceived as a philosophical essay, which focuses on the eponymous and legendary Hofmohr. Born in Africa in the early 18th century, he came to Vienna as a slave child via detours, where he was admired as an exotic, while fighting for his autonomy.

A country film with Kris Kristofferson? It seems that Hollywood star Ethan Hawke is playing the director's card. But no, of course, behind "Blaze" is no story of broken ropes and broken hearts. Hawke has instead embraced the life and work of Blaze Foley, a mis-matched Texan musician who has rarely had an easy life. The new singer Ben Dickey, who has until now rather made a name as a musician, stands out in the role of the bitter singer, who also reveals vulnerable moments. In his third work as a director, Hawke draws on iconic images and a dark, smoky atmosphere that brings the viewer into the midst of bars and saloons. And yes, Kristofferson also gets his performance.

The director of the Viennale, Sangiorgi Eva Trobisch, embarks on a "delicate underground" in "Alles ist gut", "a power struggle between the bades". The young German filmmaker explores the consequences of rape because the victim does not want to be a victim but continues to be a strong and active woman. But the displacement strategy that she uses turns out to be less than successful.
