Berlin, New York The German group of mechanical engineering Voith wants to launch a joint venture with the largest Chinese railway company CRRC. The project has already been filed with the Bundeskartellamt, reports the "Welt am Sonntag". A spokesman for Voith confirmed the intention.

As written the newspaper, the Chinese contacts and companies for the railway technicians of the Voith Turbo division are not new. There have been business relations for nearly 20 years. Drives, transmission systems and clutches are already delivered, for example for the Chinese high-speed train CRH3, which can travel up to 350 kilometers per hour.

CRRC competes with Siemens in the global railway technology sector. The Munich-based technology group is currently leading the merger of its division with the French train builder Alstom despite the European Commission's competition concerns – in order to be better positioned against its rival China.

Voith expands its operations in China through a joint venture with CRRC. It was not until early 2017 that the company opened a new large railway construction plant near Shanghai.

Since April 1, the former director of BMW Stephan Schaller heads the fortunes of mechanical engineering. Nevertheless, according to "Welt am Sonntag", it is his predecessor, Hubert Lienhard, who has done business with the CRRC.

Since leaving the company, the former boss of Voith has been a member of the shareholders' committee and the supervisory board. He is also chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Companies and represents the economic policy interests related to Asia.
