The German manufacturer plans a cheap electric car at a purchase price of less than 20,000 euros.
By insider information wants Reuters have learned that Volkswagen (VW) is developing an electric car for the entry-level segment. With an alleged price below 20,000 euros, the model would be a targeted attack against competition, led by Tesla. VW itself did not want to comment on these projects.
If electric car manufacturer Elon Musks sells its Tesla Model 3 in Austria, it should cost around 40,000 euros, twice as much as VW's cheap alternative. VW plans to convert three factories in Germany for the production of cheap electric cars. The annual production goal is 200,000 units. The commercial launch of the electronic vehicle could already take place in 2020.
New generation of VW electric cars
Volkswagen is currently developing a new generation of electric cars under the name "I.D Family", which will also include the future low-cost model. Part of the I.D. family should also be a mid-range electric car, which has to produce 100,000 pieces a year.
