Why 2019 is possible, but 2020 is more likely

Apple could theoretically launch next year an iPhone 5G on the market. The corresponding modems may already be ready for the market, but there is one important factor against which to start from 2019.

5G will soon add 4G. At the present time, politics and the telecommunications sector are tearing themselves apart pbadionately when considering possible scenarios for expansion. If it was to remain something of our politico-technological complex next year, the 5G reception in the first big-box sub-networks could already be activated next year or the year next.

The first test networks have already been tested in Berlin and other sites and, as usual, there will be pilot offers for fixed applications. In addition, the 5G is also the subject of a tender for the first time in small cell. It is therefore possible that offers from local providers are also offered to fixed network customers.

iPhone already in 2019 with the 5G? Possible, but unlikely

This means that although some will be broadcasting 5G in 2019, no one will make a phone call about the new standard. Nevertheless, the first market-ready modems will be available at the moment.

They have the final touch on Qualcomm and Mediatek also has 5G modems on the way to completion. So, Apple could theoretically deliver the 2019 iPhone with the 5G.

But this is not particularly likely: First, Apple has not always been tempted to bring technology first to customers, even if it is still barely widespread. Indeed, iPhone users often had to wait years before eminently important frequency bands or higher speeds reached Apple, which the rest of the industry has been supporting for a long time.

In November 2017, Intel announced significant advances in the wireless product roadmap to accelerate the adoption of 5G. The Intel® 5G Modem, the Intel® 5G Modem announced at CES 2017, now allows calls to be successfully made in the 28 GHz band. (Intel Corporation)

And of course, there is Qualcomm: the slick between the two companies is cut off and the pressure to bring the 5G will not be big enough next year to get closer to the Californians.

Hopefully, Intel could move to 5G by next year as well, and the 4G chips of current iPhones are getting better than expected.

Whether or not Apple will put newcomers on the iPhone Mediatek modems when it will be to introduce a new standard, which has just been standardized, then is rather questionable.
