She wrote a children’s book on friendship – then allegedly abused and neglected her 8-year-old adopted daughter so badly that she was hospitalized for weeks, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

And that’s just the start of the charges against Florida author Jennifer Wolfthal.

Wolfthal, the author of “A Real Friend”, aimed at children aged 4 and over, has been arrested on several counts of child abuse with her husband Joseph Wolfthal, 39, an engineer for Lockheed Martin.

On New Years Day, Joseph Wolfthal brought a little girl to hospital with injuries he said he suffered in a handful of accidents at home, according to police documents. But investigators did not believe his story.

“Due to the size and weight of [the girl], it is unlikely that the swollen bruise on the back of his head and the laceration on his lip and broken tooth were caused by falls from imbalance, ”the police report said.

Wolfthal had also claimed that the girl had injured her mouth while brushing her teeth too hard and that she may have suffered from vertigo. According to the police report, the girl suffered from a long list of conditions including staph infection, kidney and liver failure, malnutrition, open wounds and bruises, etc. She told investigators that she had been isolated from her siblings and other adults for months or years.

While the girl was in hospital, investigators visited the family home and said they found two other children showing “symptoms of malnutrition, bruising and lack of care.”

Police said the children’s rooms had their door handles installed upside down, with the locks on the outside.

Following Jennifer Wolfthal’s arrest in early January, the couple filed for divorce, according to WFTV. Joseph Wolfthal requests sole custody of their three adopted children.

He accused Jennifer Wolfthal of mistreating him and locking him in the laundry room earlier this month. But now he also faces charges.

Two of their three adopted children, a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, have been placed in foster care. The 8-year-old remains hospitalized, according to police records.

The adoptive parents are accused of having locked their children in their rooms for weeks at a time, and they allegedly threw cold water on them in their beds and refused them food.

Investigators said they found more than 1,100 written paragraphs that read: “My body lies flat on the bed at all times. I was never allowed to move or say anything. Now , I can write about it with everything else. I’m a jerk. “

Jennifer Wolfthal’s website was not accessible on Wednesday evening. She is due to return to court on March 9.

Her publisher, Clavis, said in a statement to local media that she would “cease marketing her book” and said they had gone their separate ways.

The book is still for sale on Amazon, but reviewers filled the comments with links to news articles about the allegations against the author.
