DIGHTON, Mass. – A 14-year-old Massachusetts boy was mutilated to death by dogs that he was treating regularly, a prosecutor said Friday.
The teenager killed Thursday night in a Dighton property was identified by Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III at a press conference under the name of Ryan Hazel, of the nearby town of Rehoboth. .
The owner of the property, who was not home at the time, cooperates with the investigators but no criminal act is suspected, Quinn said.
Dighton Police Chief Robert MacDonald looked visibly shaken.
"This kind of thing should never happen to anyone, let alone a 14-year-old boy," he said.
Ryan was brought home by his grandmother at around 6 pm Thursday, said Quinn.
She waited in the car because it did not take him more than 45 minutes. She became worried when it took longer than usual, so she called her parents, who called a neighbor.
The neighbor went to the property, found the boy and called 911 around 8 pm
Ryan had "traumatic injuries to various parts of his body" and was declared dead on the scene, Quinn said.
The police found four dogs on the property and seven at the kennel. The four free people were Dutch shepherds and Belgian malinois.
Animal control has been guarding all 11, at least one who has acted aggressively, said Quinn.
There had been no prior complaint to the police about dogs on the property, said MacDonald.
Ryan was a student at the Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School in Taunton, according to a statement by Superintendent Alexandre Magalhaes.
"We are saddened by this loss in our school community and, as we come together, our leadership team will make every effort to provide assistance to our students, families and co-workers as needed" , did he declare.
