The firefighter killed after a shootout in downtown Appleton on Wednesday was identified as firefighter Mitch Lundgaard. Appleton Fire says Lundgaard was married with three young children. Lundgaard began his career at the Appleton Fire Department in 2005.

According to a Facebook publication from the Appleton Fire Department, crews responded Wednesday around 5:30 pm in front of Block 100 E. Washington Street, to help a 47-year-old man who was arriving in a bus from the region.

Appleton Fire states that the initial report indicated that the man was suffering from a medical emergency. First responders provided initial medical assistance to the man on the bus, which, according to the Appleton police, was the subject of a seizure. According to Appleton Fire, the man, who would likely come from the Wausau area, finally left the bus and started walking towards the library.

The Appleton police said at one point that the man had brandished a handgun. Police said that gunshots were exchanged between the man and the police.

Firefighter Lundgaard was shot by a passerby and a police officer from Appleton. The policeman was released from the hospital earlier in the day. The female is in a stable state. The 47-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

The investigation is being conducted by the Green Bay Police Department. Funeral for firefighter Lundgaard is scheduled Monday at the Appleton Alliance Church. The exact time of the funeral has not yet been fixed.
